EVENT NEWS: “Curls, Curves and Cocktails” changed to “Sophisticated & Slim”

ANNOUNCING: Sophisticated & Slim!

When I first had the idea to do Curls, Curves and Cocktails I was also starting to train for my triathlon, which meant beginning to work out six days a week. I had no idea how quickly and drastically I would lose weight while in training, but my jeans are now hanging off my body and it looks like I’ve lost about 20-some pounds! Wow!

Unfortunately I’m no longer quite as “CURVY” and to celebrate, I’ve decided to change the name of “Curls, Curves and Cocktails” to “Sophisticated, Slim and Smoothies!”. Instead of featuring plus size fashions, I’ll be showcasing trends in sizes 2-4 and to keep things on a healthy track, I’ve also decided to serve fresh fruit smoothies and veggie snacks instead of alcohol! I think it will be a super fun event and hope to see all you skinny minnies there! Sound like a plan!? YAY!

just kidding!!!

aaahahahahahahahahahaahha! AAAAAAJAJAJAJAJJAJAJAJAJAJA

Gosh, I crack myself up sometimes!

Not only is Curls, Curves and Cocktails STILL very much happening THIS SATURDAY, but I’ve only gained weight in the triathlon process (which is a post for later and I can’t wait to talk about it!). I am still 100% curly and curvy over here and can’t wait to see you this weekend!

We’re actually hosting a MODEL CALL for those who want to be a part of our fashion presentation. We’re looking for ladies sizes 12-24+ with natural hair, so if you’re interested, please drop me a line with your measurements (height + size), head shot and full body photograph. Here are the details:

The panel discussion is shaping up quite delightfully and I’ll be introducing you to my co-host Miss Marie Denee of TheCurvyFashionista later this week so stay tuned for more Curls, Curves & Cocktails this week! Tickets are selling fast, so make sure to hop on em!

Meanwhile on Essence.com: My 7 Hairstyles in 2 Years!

I think I just got so jazzed about this feature that I forgot to post it here on NSB, which is too bad because it’s pretty cool!

Lemme tell you how it all came about.

As you know, I recently chopped my hair pretty darn short and the next day I woke up, looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize myself. This lack of self-recognition, however, is a feeling I’ve gotten pretty used to, especially as I think back to my various styles I’ve had over the past few years…

The Asym…The Hatchback…The Damn Fade….

Wouldn’t it be cool, I thought, if I lined up all my different styles so I could see the evolution of my natural hair journey?

Well, that “wouldn’t it be cool” idea quickly became a “would ya look at that” gallery over on Essence.com!

Here’s a few of the slides!

Pretty dramatically different styles in there, aren’t there?

Check out the full gallery here!

Of course…ohhhh, of course of course of course, I look at this gallery and look at my short cropped ‘do and can only think “what’s next!?”

I guess it makes sense: I haven’t kept the same style for longer than 4 months at this point, so why start now? I have absolutely been loving the short hair, but my one complaint is that it grows too fast!

The Naked Curl ROUND UP!

Last Tuesday Sasha of Afroniquely You organized a day for all us naturalistas to take a break from all the curl hydrating/styling/defining/smoothing products we’re used to and INSTEAD rock our 100% natural and naked curls. As soon as I heard about it, I planned on doing it, but upon waking up last Tuesday I realized that not only did I have an important event to attend that night, but it was also a SWIM practice day for my triathlon, which meant that without post-swim leave in conditioner, I risked the chance of super frizzy, dry hair that could potentially be damaged.

However, if I say I’m gonna do something, I’m gonna do it.

Normally after swimming I use a deep conditioner as a leave in because my curls are so dried up and frazzled from the chlorine. Instead, I washed and conditioned my curls then steamed then with pure water afterwards, making sure to keep my hair free of any conditioner and styling product.

Then I snapped a picture of myself with my naked curls to share with the web per our protocol–AND in an effort to take the au naturel thing to the next level, I didn’t put on make up, add a filter or retouch the photo in anyway, something I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever intentionally done before…

After posting the picture, I thought about how I had to go to my event that night and how I COULD cheat and go do my hair. Very quickly I decided not to and got all did up and rocked my naked curls ffor the event, feeling great about it the whole evening!

Overall my hair was less defined than normal, but not by much. I think that the length and the steam helped me retain a lot of definition and shape. I could see letting products go for a bit, but I do wonder about how moisturized I could keep my hair if I went longer than a day… do I sense Naked Curl WEEK!? Ha! We’ll see….

Many of you sent your pictures in of YOUR naked curls, so here are the snaps of some of the ladies who participated in #thenakedcurl :

Show Off Your Naked Curls TOMORROW! (2.12.13)

Sasha Shae-Shaw of AfroniquelyYou has come up with a BRILLIANT campaign and I wanted to get all us NaturalSelectionBlog’ers in on it!

Tomorrow, Tuesday February 12th wear your hair without any cremes, gels, conditioners, butters, whips, souffles, spritzes— you get the point: NAKED! As Sasha said “No conditioners, no curl enhancers, no manipulation, just our hair as it is!!”

I personally cannot remember the last time I went a day without some sort of product in my hair so this should be a very interesting experiment in how Lola behaves in the nude. Will she be rude or will she be gooood? (I tried to rhyme there. It went okay.)

The goal is to SHOW THE WORLD so post pix of your naked curls to Twitter/Instagram/Facebook using the hashtag #thenakedcurl and #naturalhair.  I’ll be posting mine so make sure to follow me!

I would also LOVE if you send me pictures directly so I can share them on the blog. If you’re interested in being featured, please email me a ‘WITH PRODUCT’ and ‘NO PRODUCT’ shot with the subject line ‘My Naked Curls’ to cassidy [at] naturalselectioblog [dot] com.

The Life Inspired: Afrobella on courage and finding your beauty

What can I say, Patrice (a.k.a. Afrobella) is a total G.

This weeks dose of The Life Inspired comes from her TEDx talk she gave recently in her home of Trinidad. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know her over the past couple years, first through her blog and then in person over Chicago deep dish pizza, hurricanes + beignets in NOLA and most recently on stage in Los Angeles. Despite being one of the most prominent bloggers in the world, the one thing that immediately comes across when talking with Patrice is that she is one of the most authentic individuals you will ever meet.

This talk touches on an idea that I truly believe in:

courage comes from fear.

Looking back, I realize that many of the most rewarding and memorable experiences in my life were first planted with seeds of fear. People often call me “fearless”, but the truth is that more often than not I just tap into my courage within. Whether it’s chopping my hair off or taking off to explore a foreign country on my own or quitting a full-time job to pursue my passion, courage is my guiding force.

Enjoy this inspiring talk about finding your own path, your own beauty and most importantly your own courage to face your fears and accomplish your dreams!

Brunch With EDEN: video gallery (super awesome peeps!)

Continuing in my effort to bring you the goodness from the Brunch With EDEN Los Angeles that just took place on Sunday, I have a few interviews from the event to share with you! All of these ladies brought something special and inspiring to the event and have a positive message behind their work.

The first is Jasmine Lawrence who founded EDEN Bodyworks when she was just 13 years old. Now she is wrapping up her undergrad degree and hearing her passion for healthy hair and how it inspired her to create the line was truly inspirational. Hear for yourself:

Next up is SoCal-based blogger DailyCurlz who does something that truly impresses me: bilingual blogging! Writing all of her posts in both English and Spanish, Daily has done an awesome job of making sure that the Latina curlies have the information they need when it comes to naturally curly hair. Hear about her work here:

And finally we have Miss Sherrell Dorsey who aside from being a part of the official EDEN Bodyworks team also runs her own blog Organic Beauty Vixen. With a focus on sustainable beauty and wellness products, her blog makes sure that going green means keeping glam. Hear more about her eco chic fabulousness here:

I can’t say enough about this event, y’all— it was sincerely a wonderful and informative experience for all involved. If you hear of an EDEN Bodyworks event coming up in your town in 2013 make sure that you get involved and I hope to see you there!!

My CurlConfession #1: sometimes I’m naughty at night…shhhhh….

I’m crawling into bed after a long day of travel and a long week of fun in Austin. I’m exhausted and totally not in the swing of any of my routines. I haven’t been running. I haven’t been cooking. I’ve just been eating lots of tacos, enjoying cervezas and having fun in the sun without a care in the world! Including my hair.

There are sometimes when I just can’t quite get it together enough to go through my nighttime routine for my hair. I know I always say it’s the absolute backbone of my haircare regimen and that’s because it is. But there’s definitely a few occasions where I break the cardinal rule of natural hairdom and go capless and satin-free while I catch my Z’s. Lola always pays for it in the morning, but I guess I’ll never quite learn that lesson!

Do you ever go without a sleepcap or twisting or a satin case at night? How does your hair fare??

Have a #curlconfession of your own? Submit yours over at http://www.thetruthaboutcurls.com/ and participate in an awesome new Paul Mitchell campaign that’s celebrating The Truth About Curls and their new products just for CURLS. I’m a big fan of the new line so stay tuned for a review coming up soon!!

My Night With Turquoise Jeep. Amazeballz. (+video interview!)

I’ve been waiting for this moment for years and last night I not only got to see Turquoise Jeep perform live just blocks from my house BUT I also got to sit down and chat with them all! That’s right! Imagine little ol Cass and Lola sandwiched between Flynt Flo$$y and Yung Humma and flanked by Whachamacalit, Pretty Raheem and Tummiscratch. And YES I did ask Yung Humma when we were going to see a natural style from him. It was truly the ish dreams are made of, but don’t take my word for it! Check this interview!

Me and the TJR boyz

Me and Yung Humma backstage

The concert itself was amazingly fun! I’ve been to many a concert at this venue (The Independent) and I’ve NEVER and I mean NEVER seen so many people in the space! The show was completely sold out and people were going crazy! The guys put on a fabulous show and really brought it with the dancing by doing some serious choreo. It was an absolute effing blast. Here’s a video of them closing out the show with “Did I Mention I Like to Dance”, which includes Flynt Flo$$y’s signature moonwalk.

I also want so announce the winner of the TJR t-shirt contest! Congratulations to RENON!!!! WOOOOOO!!! You’ve got your very own Turquoise Jeep t-shirt coming your way! Drop me an email so we can get that shipped to you!

All in all, such a fun night! #KTJR!
