Back in December, I started to get a major case of hair envy and decided that I wanted to grow Lola out. However, I quickly realized that without freshly clipped curls, I kinda started to look like Bradley Cooper from American Hustle. EEP!
Researching a Protective Style
For months, I’ve been loving the Marley Twist a.k.a. “Havana Twist” look and called up Deedee, The Golden Braider, located in Berkeley, CA to see if she could hook a gal up. After she explained to me that it would take about 4 hours and 6 bags of hair, I was S.O.L.D. (especially considering that normal singles take about 12-15 hours, this new style was a real time saver!).
So on a sunny Saturday morning, I crossed over the Bay Bridge armed with the above inspirational image of what I was going for and 8 bags of synthetic kanekalon “marley” hair. Right now, you’re probably thinking “Hey, Cass—didn’t you just say you only needed 6 bags of hair??
I sure did, but after years of having stylists underestimate the amount of hair I have, I knew better than to not bring a few safety bags.
Deedee and I watched movies and chatted about life, love, divas and goddesses for a solid 3 hours making a solid dent on the style when she stopped to do an inventory on the progress and broke the news that we were going to have to make a run for more hair. What can I say, Lola is a beast! #calledit
After a run to the Beauty Supply store to restock (with the total number of bags needed coming to 13) and three more hours of braiding, Lola’s new Marley Twists were finally done!
I’ve been wearing the style for about 6 weeks now and it’s beyond time for them to come out, but I have a few more things to say about the style which I’ll talk about in some upcoming posts, so stay tuned!! For now, here’s a few pix from the past few weeks that show the twists and me rocking the style!!
